So the kids are in NY so I've gotten a full night's sleep for the first
time in about a while, and parts of my brain I didn't realize were
malfunctioning now have blood and oxygen and whatever soupy hormones
they need to start sparking back up. I'm working on my SyScan talk,
which is due next week, so I wanted to warm up by answering a question
for Lurene.

----

Imagine it's 2030 and we finally understand a few things about physics
and manage to get our sorry asses off planet. We find life, of course,
and on one of the planets with life we establish a base station and
send you up there to run the computers or something. But the life is
weird - it's brightly colored equestrian and its everywhere. You'll be
holding meetings and in the corner is a tiny horse-like creature with a
long multicolored mane eating a sandwich. Of course, because they're
everywhere everyone just ignores them except when they get underfoot,
like when you're trying to lay some cable to build a spaceport or in the
occasional rare event that one of the ones with horns pokes someone or
one of the "Flutter Ponies", which have wings, flies into an air intake
and has to be pulled out (usually in pieces).

So anyways, after a couple years of this you get sick of it and you pull
up Wikipedia and you browse for few hours and maybe find a few
specialist books on the subject and then people are constantly finding
it weird that you know the difference between "Peach Blossom" and
"Rosedust". And after a few more years of this, you find the pony
creatures more interesting and maybe the Crystal ones have some conflict
resolution strategies that come in handy during your day-to-day work...

And not to draw this out too far (and stuff people's heads with even
more MLP factoids :>) but that's why I know anything about ants.
Because we call it Earth, but if you came here yesterday and managed to
land somewhere dry, you'd call it Antworld.
