[Dailydave] Everything has changed

One of the West Point strategists wrote a whole article on how you
should not use smart phones if you're a strategist. You can read it here.

Likewise, you get people who say that Cyber is not different - that "war
is war". These people are all super wrong. That's like if someone came
up to you and said "Business really isn't different, it's about the
people, cyber didn't change that." But then you say "Everything about
how you talk to people has changed." And then, if you're me, you add
"LOL" to the end of that, just to be annoying and point out how
backwards your new friend is.

But it starts by understanding how to change terrain in cyberspace - and
that starts by learning how to move a file from point A to point B,
covertly. Until you've gone through that basic effort, it's hard to take
a strategist seriously. Would you take an Army strategist seriously who
has never dug a trench?

Of course, the next generation of EINSTEIN will no doubt offer
"QUANTUM-like" effects against bugs you find in your adversaries
toolkits. This allows for attribution, which gives you understandable
deterrence. But you can't follow any of those paths just by sitting and
thinking at the creek.

Of course, if any of them want to discuss this over beers at INFILTRATE
<http://infiltratecon.org/>, we are more than happy. :)

Note: Clay Shirky was ahead of his time thinking about this stuff, and
is still worth a read: http://www.shirky.com/
