Hello,

I hope everyone is doing well!

Below is the entry for today.

08/30/2022 - Diary entry #584:

As it’s already known, ransomware is a type of malware designed to encrypt files on a user's or organization's computer, with the aim of demanding ransom payment for the decryption key. Besides that, most ransomware groups nowadays operate in the double-extortion model, publishing stolen data from victims that refuse to pay the ransom. This makes any person or organization the target of a ransomware attack as was the world's largest distributor of library books, software, and services "Baker & Taylor" last week.

Over the weekend of August 19, the company disclosed critical system outages and servers that were down following a ransomware infection, which affected their phone systems, offices, and service centers. Currently, Baker & Taylor states that they hired an outside cybersecurity firm to help deal with the attack and that no ransomware group claimed responsibility for the attack.

This is not the first time a library service provider has been attacked by ransomware. Back in April this year, the LockBit ransomware group (mentioned in many of our Daily Diaries, most recently N° 579) attacked the popular library service German "Onleihe", affecting many of the websites connected to its platform.

This shows that regardless of the type of company, anyone can become a victim of a ransomware attack, which is why we urge organizations to implement frequent backup and network segmentation to prevent the attack from spreading, and not pay the ransom as there is no guarantee the data is going to be recovered or not leaked.

Kind Regards,
