[MART] - Daily Diary #423 - Broward Health Suffered a Large-Scale Data Breach

01/03/2022 - Diary entry #423:

Broward Health, a Florida-based public healthcare system, has disclosed a data breach impacting 1,357,879 individuals. The attack happened on October 15, 2021, but was discovered four days later, on October 19.

As soon as it was discovered, Broward Health immediately notified law enforcement authorities, advised all employees to change their credentials, and hired an independent cybersecurity firm to help with the investigations. The delay to notify victims - which happened only now - was required by the Department of Justice to ensure that the notification wouldn't compromise the ongoing investigation.

Investigations revealed that the threat actors had access to sensitive information through the office of a third-party medical provider. The data exfiltrated contain names, addresses, phone numbers, Social Security numbers, bank account information, and medical history data.

Although there is no evidence that the sensitive data was used yet, this type of content, especially medical records, is very dangerous as it can be used to extort people and for social engineering or phishing attacks.
