Covered in multiple of our Daily Diaries, Lockbit is one of the most dangerous Ransomware threats active nowadays. With new victims almost everyday, Lockbit uses the double extortion model, publishing stolen data in their wall-of-shame if the victim doesn’t pay the ransom.

This week a new version of Lockbit was found being advertised in deep web forums. Although details of the malware are not released yet - and neither the new wall-of-shame - the cybercrime group announced a bug bounty program, rewarding “ethical and unethical hackers“ up to $1 million dollars. The new page also will add another face of the extortion model: instead of just publishing data of high profile targets, they will also be auctioned to other threat actors.

Although this is a way for Lockbit to show confidence, this also reveals how Lockbit (and probably other major ransomware gangs) is afraid of being compromised. Vulnerabilities in ransomware infrastructure can be used by law enforcement as a counter-hacking method, uncovering the real individuals behind it and allowing the domains to be seized and shutdown.
