Following the thread started in our Daily Diary #420, today we will cover a technique heavily used by many threat actors in the wild: Process Hollowing.

<div>Tracked in the MITRE ATT&CK Framework as T1055.012, it's considered a "sub-technique" of Process Injection, a category of techniques used by threat actors to execute malicious code inside a trusted process.</div>

<div>In Process Hollowing, a trusted process is executed in a suspended mode, like Windows notepad.exe, calc.exe or explorer.exe. With the process suspended, no GUI or action is displayed to the user, being executed only in background. Then, the malicious process
allocates a memory block inside the suspended process, allocating code, such as a DLL, and starting a new thread to execute the allocated code. The original malicious process can then terminate and erase footprints in the system. The result is a process that
seems trusted being executed, while in fact the malicious code of a long gone process is in memory.</div>

<div>Process Hollowing is an old (yet fancy) technique used by many malware families. This kind of technique is very important to have in mind when hunting malicious activities or performing forensics on infected machines - Even what seems to be trusted needs
to be tested - by performing memory dumps a skilled analyst can recover the injected code and continue the analysis.</div>
